Oriol Romeu, out of Barça's plans: Girona waits

The sports management of FC Barcelona is working to put together the squad for the 2025/26 season. In this sense, one of those chosen to leave the club is Oriol Romeu, who has no place in the squad, while Girona hopes to incorporate him for free.

The player, whose contract ends in the summer of 2026, returned to training with the Blaugrana team after finishing his loan to the 'gironins' team during the 2024/25 season.

Also, according to the latest information, a meeting between Hansi Flick and Oriol Romeu is expected in the coming days. In it, the German coach will inform him that he is not in his plans for the season.

Oriol Romeu returned, but never found his place at Barça

In this context, the midfielder was part of Barcelona's youth categories, making his debut with the first team under Pep Guardiola during a Spanish Super Cup match on August 14, 2010 against Sevilla.

However, in July 2011, Barça reached an agreement with Chelsea to transfer the player for 4.3 million euros. Oriol Romeu was seen, in principle, as the replacement for Sergio Busquets, but the arrival of Javier Mascherano changed the plans for the current '18' culé.

Returning a bit to the present, in the summer market of 2023, Barça signed the player for a sum of €3.4 million euros corresponding to his termination clause with Girona, his team at that time.

This incorporation was expected as a replacement for Busquets, but the bet ended up going wrong, since the player signed for 3 seasons (2026) and has only been in one (2023/24).

A series of bad games sentenced the '18' during that season led by Xavi Hernández. The player showed a solid performance during the preseason, but in the campaign he could not sustain the same. In 24/25 he ends up leaving on loan to Girona, where he participated in 31 games (1,805 minutes).

Romeu fits into Girona's plans

At Montilivi, they would be delighted to have the 33-year-old midfielder, starting with technical director Míchel. However, they would be waiting to see how the player ends up separating from Barça. Despite this, in recent days there has also been interest from Sevilla, but the 'blanquirrojos' have not moved for the Ulldecona native.

Also, the 'gironins' would not be interested in paying a transfer, but they would like to have the player during the next season. In addition, apparently, the player would not object to leaving, since he believes he needs to have a leading role.

Now, it remains to be defined the formula for Oriol Romeu's departure, given that the possibilities of completing a transfer to any other team are complex; the most viable option would be a termination of contract that allows him to disassociate himself from the Blaugrana team in a consensual manner.
